CHENNAI — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay issued a stern warning on Monday against personal attacks, vulgarity, and defamatory remarks targeting women, declaring that such conduct would face immediate and uncompromising legal action.
Delivering his concluding address on the demands for grants for the Home department—a portfolio he personally holds—in the state Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay emphasized the critical need to preserve decorum in political discourse.
Without explicitly naming political rivals, Vijay’s sharp remarks appeared directed at the opposition DMK following recent controversies involving objectionable public comments about women in political and public life.
‘A River of Vulgarity and Hatred’
Addressing the Assembly, the Chief Minister expressed strong concern over the deteriorating standard of public debate in the state.
“Under the guise of politics, to those who personally disrespect our people, women, or anyone else and speak in a low and degrading manner, my request is: please do not do that. Recently in Tamil Nadu, it seems as though a river of vulgarity and hatred is continuously flowing. Being abusive about women, making defamatory remarks, and using double-meaning words is wrong,” Chief Minister Vijay stated.
He added that while sharp political criticism is a fundamental right in a healthy democracy, it must never cross ethical boundaries into personal character assassination or misogynistic attacks.
Recalling the 1989 Assembly Incident
Invoking one of the most volatile chapters in Tamil Nadu’s political history, Vijay referenced the infamous 1989 Legislative Assembly incident where former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa was allegedly assaulted and humiliated on the house floor.
Describing the event as one of the darkest episodes in the state’s legislative history, Vijay asserted that political rivalries, no matter how intense, can never justify a return to such behavior.
Backdrop of Political Friction
Vijay’s strong stance comes in the wake of recent political flare-ups in the state. Just weeks prior, DMK leader and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was briefly arrested and released on station bail after allegedly making controversial, double-meaning comments widely interpreted as targeting prominent actor Trisha during a party demonstration over the Cauvery water dispute.
With the state political climate heating up, the Chief Minister’s unequivocal warning signals a zero-tolerance policy by the state administration toward misogyny and defamation in both digital and public arenas.
