NEW DELHI: Hollywood heavyweights are joining forces for an unexpected cinematic collaboration. Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington and acclaimed filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie—best known for steering the Mission: Impossible franchise—have officially signed on to team up for a high-profile, untitled original crime thriller.
Greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists, the project is moving at a rapid pace. Production is slated to kick off next month in New Jersey, with a theatrical release already locked in for October 1, 2027.
What is the Plot About?
The script, written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner (known for Into the Dark and Edge of Fear), follows a gripping, high-stakes premise.
The story centers on a former police detective who is currently serving a life sentence. When he is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, he is granted a compassionate release with only six months left to live. Returning home to make amends, he hopes to reconnect with his estranged daughter and a grandson he has never met. However, his dangerous criminal past refuses to let him walk away quietly.
A Massive Change of Pace for Both Icons
This feature marks an intriguing pivot for both men. Christopher McQuarrie has spent the last decade deeply entrenched with Tom Cruise and Skydance, directing blockbuster sequels for the Mission: Impossible franchise, culminating in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This new thriller serves as his major feature film step outside of that massive franchise sandbox.
Meanwhile, Denzel Washington remains a master of the crime thriller genre, having delivered iconic performances in modern classics like Training Day, Man on Fire, and The Equalizer franchise. The pairing of Washington’s commanding screen presence with McQuarrie’s knack for sharp, tension-driven storytelling immediately positions the movie as one of the most anticipated cinematic events of 2027.
