In an industry often driven strictly by box-office bottom lines, Marathi cinema has delivered a heartwarming story of solidarity, philanthropy, and cross-industry brotherhood. Deool Band 2, a social commentary centering on the struggles of Indian farmers, has officially crossed the coveted ₹100 crore mark globally.

In an astonishing turn of events, director Pravin Tarde revealed that the filmmakers have chosen to donate the entire net profit from the blockbuster to support the children of farmers who died by suicide. However, as Tarde shared in a recent interview, this massive victory and philanthropic effort would never have materialized without a critical, selfless intervention by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

The ₹42 Lakh Hurdle: How Shah Rukh Khan Stepped In

Produced on a modest budget of roughly ₹8 crore to ₹10 crore, Deool Band 2 hit a severe financial roadblock right before its theatrical debut. To release the film across digital cinema screens, the makers needed to procure a Digital Cinema Package (DCP).

Having initially budgeted around ₹12 lakh for digital processing, the team was shocked when the final DCP bill from Red Chillies Entertainment—Shah Rukh Khan’s VFX and post-production powerhouse—came out to nearly ₹42 lakh.

Speaking about the crisis, Tarde explained that the production team simply did not have the capital to settle the invoice. “We approached Red Chillies and explained our situation. We told them that it was a regional Marathi film with a limited budget, but we wanted to give it a wide release,” Tarde recalled.

When the matter reached Shah Rukh Khan, the actor inquired about the project. Upon learning that the film was made by the creators of Mulshi Pattern (which Salman Khan later adapted into Antim), SRK evaluated the situation. Realizing the emotional depth of the film and the creators’ financial constraints, King Khan gave immediate instructions to his technical team: “Waive off their bill.”

SRK instructed his team to hand over the DCP immediately so the release wouldn’t be delayed, remarking that supporting good regional cinema was far more important than recovering the money upfront.

100% Profits Donated to Families of Farmers

Shah Rukh Khan’s decision to waive the fee allowed Deool Band 2 to hit theaters on schedule. Driven by strong word-of-mouth and deep emotional resonance, the film went on to become a box-office phenomenon, grossing over ₹100 crore worldwide.

Staying true to the core theme of their film, the creators kept only the original production costs for themselves and directed every single rupee of profit toward social welfare.

“What made Deool Band 2 a unique film across India is that despite earning ₹100 crore, we only retained our base cost of production,” director Pravin Tarde shared. “Every single penny earned as profit was donated to the children of farmers who died by suicide so they could resume their education.”

In collaboration with producer Kailash Vani, the team has been actively distributing educational aid across drought-hit districts of Maharashtra. Furthermore, the earnings from Deool Band 2 are currently funding two daily meals for over 250 children, a sustainable initiative the makers intend to support for years to come.

Tarde extended his heartfelt gratitude to Shah Rukh Khan, emphasizing that SRK’s respect for Marathi cinema laid the foundation for an initiative that is now transforming hundreds of young lives.
