NEW DELHI — Despite global bullion prices holding near a three-month high after a rapid five percent surge, Indian retail counters are seeing minimal recycling of household gold. Industry metrics indicate that while consumers are monitoring the rally, old gold sales have posted only marginal month-on-month gains, even as the festive season kicks off.
According to data and observations from the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), retail transaction volumes have failed to gain momentum despite the recent passage of key cultural milestones such as Raksha Bandhan.
“There is no significant improvement in sales at the retail counter. It is slightly better than the previous month, but festive buying has not yet picked up momentum despite Raksha Bandhan,” said Surendra Mehta, Secretary of IBJA.
Mehta cautioned that if global and domestic price surges persist unhindered, end-user physical demand could face continued headwind across urban and rural markets ahead of the upcoming peak wedding season.
What Is Driving the Bullion Rally?
International gold prices hovered around $4,633 per ounce in recent fixing, holding strong after touching three-month highs. Analysts attribute this global momentum to:
US Macroeconomic Concerns: Heightened anxiety over US fiscal sustainability and ongoing Treasury market interventions.
Currency Pressure: Softening performance in the US Dollar index, driving capital toward safe-haven assets.
Monetary Policy Signals: Market consolidation ahead of central bank monetary cues, specifically Fed Chair remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium.
On the domestic front, prices on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) are testing crucial resistance levels.
“The key is whether gold can sustain above $4,700–$4,750 per ounce rather than simply touching that band and facing profit-taking. On the MCX, the ₹1,65,000 to ₹1,66,000 range acts as a key resistance zone. A breakout above this level could trigger further upside,” noted Nirpendra Yadav, Senior Research Analyst at Bonanza.
Domestic Market Dynamics and Outlook
While international spot prices remain elevated, local price increases have been somewhat tempered by currency movements. Domestic rates recently adjusted from ₹164,700 to ₹157,000, largely influenced by Indian Rupee strength and foreign exchange interventions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
| Market Level | Metric / Price Band | Underlying Driver |
|---|---|---|
| Global Spot Gold | $4,585 – $4,675 / oz (Consolidation Zone) | Dollar weakness, safe-haven flows |
| Domestic MCX Gold | ₹1,65,000 – ₹1,66,000 (Resistance Zone) | Global parity & import dynamics |
| Retail Counter Demand | Marginal MoM uptick | Price hesitation, delayed festive buying |
Industry watchers note that households are currently holding onto existing jewellery assets, expecting further clarity on price direction before choosing to liquidate or exchange old gold for new festive purchases.
