April 22, 2025, will be remembered not just as the day terror revisited Kashmir, but as the day every Indian heart broke a little.
What began as a bright spring morning in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow ended in horror. Militants opened fire on a group of tourists, killing 26 civilians and injuring over three dozen, including women and children. A place once known for its healing silence and pine-scented winds now echoes with grief.
The Valley mourned. Every major newspaper in Kashmir carried black front pages, a rare protest in press history that captured the region’s anguish and collective grief. Known as the ink of silence, it was a powerful editorial decision: to say nothing because the pain said it all.
Srinagar’s streets were still as the victims’ bodies were flown in. Locals, who had only just begun to believe in peace and boost in tourism again, stood in silent disbelief.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres swiftly condemned the attack: “The killing of unarmed civilians is unacceptable in any form. The international community must stand united against such brutality.”
The US State Department, French Foreign Office, and ASEAN Secretariat echoed this. Across India and the world, public figures voiced shock and solidarity. Social media flooded with hashtags like #PahalgamAttack and #StandWithIndia.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, already in the Union Territory, visited the site and paid his respects. “With a heavy heart, I paid my last respects to the victims. Bharat will not bend to terror. The culprits will not be spared.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “We mourn deeply with the families who lost their loved ones. India stands with Pahalgam. We will respond — with strength and unity.”
Among the fallen was Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a Navy officer on leave from Haryana, who shielded children during the chaos.Security forces acted swiftly. By nightfall, three militants were neutralized. A combing operation continues across Anantnag.
But we’ve also seen something else. A nation that mourned together, and then stood taller. From newspaper editors in Kashmir to volunteers in Jammu lining up to donate blood, India refused to flinch.
This wasn’t just an attack on Pahalgam. It was an attack on peace, innocence, and trust. And we, as a people, will fight for all three, with everything we have.
