A major aviation disaster was narrowly averted over Middle Eastern skies on Wednesday after a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terror scene inside the cockpit. Israeli security agencies are probing an alleged hijacking attempt after an Omani co-pilot stabbed the Emirati captain mid-flight, forcing an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

The incident unfolded aboard FlyDubai Flight FZ-1073, which had departed Dubai bound for Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. Around two hours into the journey, flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 recorded an abrupt, alarming descent of 16,000 feet within a single minute, followed by erratic maneuvers near the Jordanian border.
According to Israeli media reports citing security officials, the Omani first officer attacked the main pilot with a sharp object inside the cockpit in an apparent bid to seize control of the aircraft.
Passengers and crew members reported hearing a violent struggle inside the flight deck before crew members and brave passengers intervened to subdue the assailant.
“It is unclear what the pilot was attempting—whether to hijack the plane to Israel, crash it into the ground, or carry out a 9/11-style attack. What is clear is that he wanted to hijack the plane and that a major disaster was averted,” an Israeli official told Israeli broadcaster i24 News.
Emergency Landing in Tabuk and Fighter Jets Scrambled
As the emergency signal broadcasted from the cockpit, Israel placed its air defense systems on high alert and scrambled fighter jets to intercept the airliner if it approached Israeli airspace under hostile control.
The injured flight crew managed to stabilize the aircraft and divert it into Saudi airspace. The plane safely executed an emergency landing at Tabuk Regional Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Both the captain and the co-pilot were immediately transported to a local medical facility in Tabuk for treatment.
Diplomatic Complications and Rescue Delays
The incident has created a delicate diplomatic situation. Saudi Arabia and Israel do not hold formal diplomatic relations, complicating standard passenger evacuation protocols.
While FlyDubai dispatched replacement aircraft to transport stranded travelers from Tabuk to Tel Aviv, several Israeli nationals onboard reportedly refused to board the regional charter flights, demanding an official Israeli government evacuation instead.
Geopolitical Tension and Security Warnings
The mid-air terror scare comes at a time of extreme regional volatility. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly cancelled scheduled domestic travel on Wednesday to convene an emergency session with senior military and intelligence leadership.
The scare occurred just weeks ahead of Israel’s upcoming national election on October 27. Only a day prior, Netanyahu had publicly warned that hostile regional actors might attempt high-profile attacks to disrupt the democratic process.
