New Delhi: The 71st National Film Awards, announced in Delhi, sparked political controversy after Sudipto Sen’s film The Kerala Story received the award for Best Cinematography. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan strongly criticized the decision, accusing the central government of legitimizing a divisive narrative.
Taking to his official X account, Vijayan wrote, “By awarding a film that spreads misinformation with the clear intent of defaming Kerala and fuelling communal discord, the jury of the National Film Awards has effectively endorsed the ideology of the Sangh Parivar.”
In a follow-up statement, the Kerala CM added, “Kerala has always stood as a symbol of communal harmony and resistance against divisive politics. This decision is an affront not just to the people of Kerala but to everyone who values democracy and constitutional principles. It is our collective responsibility to defend the truth.”
The National Film Awards jury has not yet responded to the criticism. Meanwhile, The Kerala Story continues to remain at the centre of a heated national debate on cinema, politics, and freedom of expression.
