NEW DELHI: In the glamorous yet fickle world of Bollywood, friendships are often tested when the cameras stop rolling. For actor Vivek Oberoi, who experienced a meteoric rise in the early 2000s with hits like Company and Saathiya, the subsequent fall was sudden and brutal. Following a highly publicized fallout with Salman Khan, Oberoi found himself facing an unspoken, systematic boycott within the film industry.
While many distanced themselves from the embattled actor, one prominent industry heavyweight chose to stand by him. In a candid conversation, Vivek Oberoi opened up about how Bollywood superstar and Welcome to the Jungle actor, Akshay Kumar, stepped in to pull him out of his career slump when no one else would.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
Recalling the darkest phase of his career, Oberoi revealed that he was facing constant rejection and sitting at home with no work on the horizon. Out of nowhere, it was Akshay Kumar who reached out to offer comfort and a way forward.
“Akshay Kumar, superstar! He called me one day and asked, ‘Where are you?'” Oberoi shared during an interview with Mirchi Plus. “I told him that I am at home, very depressed. Half an hour later, he landed at my house. He said that he wanted to sit and talk to me, and asked about the problems I was going through.”
A Practical Solution Instead of Political Battles
Instead of promising to fight industry lobbies or wage an online war, Akshay Kumar offered Oberoi a grounded, practical solution to get back on his feet. Recognizing that Vivek was struggling mentally and financially, Kumar offered to divert high-paying stage shows and performance opportunities his way.
“He said, ‘See, I can’t do anything about all of this, but I can help in shaping your positive mindset,'” Oberoi recounted. Kumar explained that due to his packed shooting schedules, he was unable to attend various blockbuster song performances and public events, suggesting Vivek take his place instead.
Initially, Oberoi was in complete disbelief. “He didn’t want to do them and asked me to take them up. Kya baat hai! Who does something like this for someone?” Oberoi remarked, expressing immense gratitude for the gesture.
Reclaiming the Spotlight and Overcoming Frustration
The strategy worked wonders. Stepping back onto the stage allowed Oberoi to reconnect with fans, earn a steady income, and rebuild his shattered confidence.
“With that help, I started going back on stage, started seeing fans in a show, hearing them cheer, and I got a good positive feeling. I earned money also,” Oberoi added.
The actor confessed that the boycott phase had bred a lot of internal frustration. Despite delivering successful films and winning awards, the sudden lack of work felt inexplicable. Rather than fighting the system, Kumar’s practical intervention helped Oberoi bypass the gatekeepers and find validation directly from the audience.
The Roots of the Boycott
The industry cold shoulder stems back to a infamous press conference called by Vivek Oberoi in 2003. During the media briefing, Oberoi accused Salman Khan of threatening and intimidating him over his relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai, who had recently broken up with Khan. The public confrontation led to an immediate backlash, resulting in major production houses alienating Oberoi for years.
Decades later, Vivek Oberoi’s revelations serve as a poignant reminder that true camaraderie exists in Bollywood, proving why Akshay Kumar is held in such high regard by his peers both on and off the screen.
