Overview
When Shah Rukh Khan returned after a four-year break with Pathaan, it was a grand, massy comeback. Now, after three years, Aamir Khan is back with Sitare Zameen Par. His entry is much simpler .He steps out of a car in the very first scene, without any dramatic flair.
At first, the film makes you wonder will Aamir once again play his character in a monotone like he did in Laal Singh Chaddha? In several early scenes, he appears with similar expressions. But thankfully, he gradually finds the rhythm of his character.
And this rhythm is very different from the actor who played the coach in the original film (which this is loosely based on). In fact, this movie is quite different from the original one, which has led to some online trolling. However, this version is full of enjoyable desi flavors and, most importantly, it never bores you.
Despite being slow-paced and emotional at times, the film always regains its momentum at just the right moments. It conveys a powerful message about Down syndrome and neurodivergence in a fresh and touching way.
This is not entirely Aamir’s film either. Every minor character is given space, whether it is Aamir’s mother or Genelia Deshmukh as his wife Sunita. Genelia brings a certain grace to the screen. She speaks slowly, and the reason behind this remains unclear till the end, especially considering her Hindi is quite fluent. Nevertheless, when the overall product is strong, some flaws become forgivable.
The soul of the film lies in its ten special child actors. Full credit to director R.S. Prasanna for drawing out such brilliant performances from them. Each child has their own storyline, and by the end of the film, you fall in love with all of them.
Acting
Aamir delivers a nuanced performance with several layers to his character, and it is enjoyable to watch in his signature style. Genelia adds charm to the screen, and her acting has always been solid. The ten children, from Satbir to Guddu, Sharma Ji to Golu, win your heart not because they are acting, but because they radiate genuine innocence.
The film also features three important supporting actors: Dolly Ahluwalia, Gurpal Singh, and Brijendra Kala.
