In a historic pilot initiative driven by the Telangana government under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, 50 transgender individuals were appointed as Traffic Assistants. This marks a significant milestone in progressive governance that emphasizes inclusivity, meaningful employment opportunities, and formal recognition in society.
The recruitment drive was conducted at the Goshamahal Police Grounds. Participants were required to be aged between 18-40, with a minimum educational qualification of SSC (10th standard) and a personal identity card issued by the District Magistrate, giving preference to residents within Hyderabad Commissionerate’s jurisdiction.
The stringent selection process also included physical tests such as 800-meter run, long jump, and shot-put. The minimum height requirement was fixed at 165 cm for transgender women (160 cm for ST candidates).
Their responsibilities involves managing traffic, ensuring road safety, and helping commuters across the city.
Overseeing the process were officials including Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand, Anitha Ramachandran from the Women and Child Welfare Department, Ravi Gupta, Principal Secretary of Home Department, P. Vishwaprasad, Additional CP (Traffic), and other senior police officers including DCP South West, Home Guard Commandant, and Additional DCP CAR.
Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Commissioner C.V. Anand encouraged the newly appointed Traffic Assistants to serve as role models, asking them to use this opportunity to showcase the value of inclusion and challenge societal prejudices.
For the recruits, this role represents dignity and a new sense of purpose after years of societal rejection.
The effort reflects Telangana’s commitment to inclusive governance and social equity. It is more than just employment—it’s about dignity, visibility, and inclusion.
Through this pioneering model of inclusivity, the Telangana government hopes to inspire similar efforts across India, proving that empowering marginalised communities enriches society.
