In a significant political development that has reshaped the legislative arithmetic in Bihar, two newly elected independent MLCs—Banshidhar Brijwasi and Rahul Raj—have officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Patna. The induction took place following a high-level legislative party meeting, intensifying discussions around intra-alliance coordination within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The Electoral Context
The induction follows the recent high-stakes Bihar Legislative Council elections, where both leaders contested and won as independent candidates by defeating candidates fielded by the Janata Dal (United)—a key NDA ally:
Banshidhar Brijwasi secured victory in the Tirhut Graduate constituency, defeating JD(U) nominee Abhishek Jha.
Rahul Raj emerged victorious from the Saran Teachers’ constituency, overcoming JD(U)-backed contender Anand Pushkar.
Following their victories, both leaders formally aligned with the BJP after interactions with state leadership, including discussions with Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
Impact on Upper House Dynamics
The entry of Brijwasi and Rahul Raj into the BJP fold significantly alters the strength matrix inside the 75-member Bihar Legislative Council:
With these additions, the BJP’s legislative standing in the Upper House has strengthened to 26 members.
The JD(U) maintains 20 seats, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) holds 17.
Political Repercussions and Opposition Backlash
The political shift has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has raised objections, questioning the alliance framework and calling for scrutiny under anti-defection provisions regarding independent members aligning with ruling parties post-polls.
Despite the friction, the BJP leadership views the development as a major consolidation of its legislative footprint in Bihar, strengthening the NDA’s overall policy implementation capacity in the state’s bicameral legislature.
