India has created history in global agriculture by emerging as the world’s largest rice producer, surpassing China with a record production of 150.18 million tonnes in 2025, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced.

Calling it a landmark moment for Indian agriculture, the minister said the achievement reflects the resilience of farmers and the success of policy measures aimed at enhancing productivity and food security. This is the first time India has overtaken China to claim the top position in global rice production.

Officials attributed the record output to favourable monsoon conditions, expanded cultivation area, improved irrigation facilities, and the increased adoption of high-yielding and climate-resilient rice varieties. Government initiatives supporting minimum support prices (MSP), timely procurement, and access to modern farming inputs also played a significant role.

India’s rise to the top spot strengthens its position in the global foodgrain market, even as the government continues to prioritise domestic food security under the Public Distribution System. The milestone is expected to boost farmer confidence and reinforce India’s role as a key contributor to global food supplies.

Agricultural experts said the achievement highlights the need to sustain productivity while addressing challenges such as climate variability, water management, and sustainable farming practices.
