An 18-year-old woman was arrested in Banda district after a man died during what police describe as a desperate act of self-defence following an alleged attempt to sexually assault her inside her home.

The incident took place in Murwal village when the man, a neighbour in his forties, allegedly entered the woman’s house while she was alone and tried to assault her. Police said he was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Facing immediate danger, the teenager is said to have grabbed an axe kept inside the house and struck the man in an attempt to protect herself. The injuries proved fatal.

After the incident, the woman went to a nearby police outpost and informed officials about what had occurred. The body was later recovered from her residence.

A case of murder has been registered based on a complaint filed by the deceased man’s family members, and the woman has been produced before a court. Police officials, however, said preliminary findings point towards self-defence, a claim that will be closely examined during the investigation.

Under Indian law, the right to private defence allows a person to cause even fatal harm if there is a reasonable fear of rape or grievous injury. Authorities said all evidence, including forensic reports and witness statements, will be placed before the court to determine the final course of action.

The case has sparked renewed discussion on women’s safety and the legal boundaries of self-defence in situations involving sexual violence.
