The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has significantly strengthened its maritime surveillance and security capabilities with the induction of Samudra Pratap, a powerful offshore patrol vessel whose name aptly means Majesty of the Seas. The new ship reflects India’s growing focus on safeguarding its vast coastline, exclusive economic zone, and critical sea lanes.

Designed to meet modern maritime challenges, Samudra Pratap embodies the Coast Guard’s core mandate of ensuring safe, secure and clean seas while protecting the nation’s maritime interests. The vessel will play a crucial role in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, environmental protection, and coastal security missions.

With a displacement of 4,170 tonnes and a commanding length of 114.5 metres, Samudra Pratap is among the most capable platforms in the ICG’s fleet. The ship is engineered to achieve speeds exceeding 22 knots, enabling rapid response during emergencies and high-intensity operations across India’s maritime zones.

The induction of Samudra Pratap comes at a time when India is enhancing its maritime preparedness amid evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region. The vessel’s endurance and operational flexibility will allow it to undertake prolonged patrols, strengthen domain awareness, and deter illegal activities such as smuggling, poaching, and maritime pollution.

Beyond security, the ship underscores India’s commitment to marine environmental protection. Equipped to support pollution response and monitoring missions, Samudra Pratap reinforces the Coast Guard’s role as the frontline guardian of India’s maritime ecology.

As India expands its naval and coast guard capabilities, Samudra Pratap stands as a symbol of maritime strength, technological advancement, and national resolve—truly living up to its name as the Majesty of the Seas.
