New Delhi, July 21 — Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially stepped down from his role as the Vice President of India, citing medical reasons as the primary factor behind his decision. The resignation, submitted on Monday, comes into effect immediately and was tendered under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
Dhankhar, who has served as Vice President since 2022, also held the position of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha during his tenure. Prior to assuming this constitutional role, he was the Governor of West Bengal between 2019 and 2022.
At 74, Dhankhar’s term was originally set to continue until 2027. His decision to resign coincided with the commencement of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, adding a significant development to the day’s proceedings.
In his resignation letter addressed to the President, Dhankhar expressed appreciation for the cooperation he received during his tenure. He acknowledged the steadfast support of the President, Prime Minister, and members of both Houses of Parliament.
“Guided by medical advice and with the intention to focus on my health, I have chosen to step down from my responsibilities,” he noted in the letter.
He went on to commend the working relationship shared with the President and offered thanks to the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers for their consistent backing. Dhankhar also acknowledged the warmth and trust extended to him by Members of Parliament, stating that their support would remain a lasting memory.
Reflecting on his time in office, he described it as a privilege to serve during a period marked by significant national development. “It has been deeply fulfilling to be part of a transformative phase in the country’s journey,” he wrote.
No official announcement has yet been made regarding his successor.
