Rio de Janeiro, Brazil : Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand reception from the Indian community upon his arrival in Brazil on Sunday, marking the beginning of a four-day official visit that includes participation in the 17th BRICS Summit and a state visit to the country.
Members of the Indian diaspora turned out in large numbers to welcome the Prime Minister, celebrating his arrival with traditional dance performances and folk songs. A highlight of the cultural programme was a dance themed on Operation Sindoor, set to the powerful refrain ‘Yeh desh nahi mitne dungaa’, which echoed throughout the venue. A Brazilian music group also joined the celebrations, performing devotional songs that reflected India’s spiritual heritage and cultural diversity.
PM Modi is in Brazil from July 6 to 9 as part of a larger five-nation, eight-day tour. His schedule in Brazil includes attending the BRICS Leaders’ —Summit in Rio de Janeiro —on July 6 and 7, where he is expected to engage in discussions on pressing global issues such as peace and security, the responsible development of artificial intelligence, multilateral cooperation, climate change, global health, and economic resilience.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is anticipated to hold several bilateral meetings with fellow world leaders.
Following the summit, the Prime Minister will travel to Brasilia for a State Visit, where he will meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Brazil, focusing on areas such as trade, defence, space, energy, technology, agriculture, healthcare, and people-to-people ties.
Members of the Indian community in Brazil expressed pride and excitement over the Prime Minister’s visit.
“I am from Gujarat and have been living in Brazil for a long time. It is a matter of great honour to welcome our Prime Minister here today”, said Vijay Solanki, a member of the local Indian diaspora.
Pooja, another member of the community, echoed the sentiment.” I have been living in Brazil for three years, and I am thrilled to have the chance to meet him in person”, she said.
PM Modi arrived in Brazil after completing a visit to Argentina, where he held bilateral talks with President Javier Milei. Earlier stops on his multi-nation tour included Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago. Following his engagements in Brazil, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Namibia on July 9, where he is expected to address the country’s parliament.
