Kamal Haasan Set to Enter Rajya Sabha with Backing from Major Dravidian Allies
Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan is ready to enter the Rajya Sabha following a political agreement with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu are scheduled for June 19, with vote counting set for the same day at 5 PM.
The election is being held because the term of six Rajya Sabha members from Tamil Nadu is ending. These include M Shanmugam, M Mohamed Abdulla, and P Wilson from the DMK, Vaiko from the MDMK, and Anbumani Ramadoss from the PMK.
The DMK and its allies have 159 MLAs in the 234-member state assembly. So, they are likely to win four out of the six Rajya Sabha seats. The AIADMK, which has 62 MLAs and support from four BJP MLAs, is expected to win the other two seats.
Kamal Haasan’s MNM, which joined the DMK-led alliance in 2024, has been allocated one Rajya Sabha seat as part of the alliance agreement. MNM is expected to formalize Haasan’s candidature in an upcoming meeting of its central governing body and executive committee.
Anbumani Ramadoss is not getting support because neither DMK or AIADMK has backed him for re-election. Without their support, it is difficult for him to secure enough votes. PMK leaders are still hoping that their party can find a way to get AIADMK’s support, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
The AIADMK leadership is considering nominating candidates from Dalit and minority communities for the Rajya Sabha seats. Meanwhile, within the DMK, some members have requested the leadership to retain Vaiko’s seat, chance are the party may not consider this request.
Kamal Haasan is likely to enter the Rajya Sabha, which is an important step in Tamil Nadu politics. It shows how political alliances and strategies are changing before the upcoming elections.
