In a recent statement that has drawn regional attention, Pakistan Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that Islam and Jihad are not only religious beliefs but are also included in the training and ethos of the Pakistani military.

Addressing a press conference on May 14, Chaudhry said, “Islam is our religion and the foundation of our beliefs. Jihad is an essential part of our training and thinking. Our motto, ‘Iman, Taqwa, Jihad fi Sabilillah’ (Faith, Piety, Struggle in the Path of God), is taken directly from the Quran.” He added that these values are deeply set in the institutional framework of the army.
The statement comes during heightened tensions in the region following India’s “Operation Sindoor,” an airstrike on terrorist camps located approximately 200 km within Pakistani territory.
In response to the Pakistani spokesperson’s remarks, Indian government sources have said that any attempt to justify militarization through religious ideology could have serious implications for peace and security in South Asia.

The Indian armed forces have not issued an official statement but maintain that their operational ethos is rooted in constitutional values and a secular framework.

Meanwhile, diplomatic circles are closely watching the developments. Analysts have noted that this is the first time in recent years that a senior military official in Pakistan has made such a direct linkage between military operations and religious ideology in a formal address.

There has been no comment yet from international defense observers or multilateral organizations on the matter. The situation continues to evolve, with regional stability and cross-border relations under scrutiny.
