Sunil Chhetri has given Indian football fans a reason to celebrate by reversing his retirement decision. The legendary striker is back to start his second innings at the age of 40 to lead the national team.
His return isn’t just about playing, it’s about guiding, mentoring, and strengthening the squad ahead of crucial tournaments.
Chhetri, India’s top goal-scorer, retired from international football in June 2024 after a goalless draw against Kuwait in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He had played 151 matches over nearly two decades. His decision wasn’t about age or fitness but for instinct.
But from the sidelines, he saw what every Indian football fan did, the void, the struggle, especially in attack. And that’s not something a leader ignores. So, when Coach Manolo Marquez sat him down for a chat about the importance of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, Chhetri decided to return and bring his invaluable presence back to the game.
“The captain, leader, legend will return to the Indian national team for the FIFA International Window in March,” announced the AIFF, and just like that, Indian football breathed easier.
Chhetri’s return comes at an important time, as India prepares to face Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers on March 25. Before that, the team will play a friendly match against the Maldives on March 19 to gear up for the challenge. Both matches are scheduled to take place in Shillong.
India has been placed in a qualifying group alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong (China), and Singapore for the Asian Cup. In the tournament’s previous edition, India had a disappointing run, failing to progress past the group stage after losing all their matches.
With 252 goals in 515 matches for club and country, Chhetri stands among legends, trailing only Ronaldo, Messi, and Ali Daei in international goals. FIFA even honoured him with a documentary, Captain Fantastic, celebrating his journey.
Fans never truly accepted his retirement, and neither did Indian football. So here he is, back in blue, leading the charge once more. Welcome back, captain! The journey continues..
