NEW DELHI — In a major development in national politics, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has reiterated his decision to resign from the party’s primary membership and organizational roles. Poonawalla cited “pressing emergency financial and personal circumstances” as the driver behind his departure, announcing plans to transition into the corporate private sector.

Poonawalla initially submitted his resignation on July 30, 2026. Although the BJP leadership originally declined to accept his exit and requested him to reconsider, the 38-year-old lawyer-turned-politician issued a fresh letter on Monday to BJP National President Nitin Nabin, urging the party leadership to formally relieve him of his duties.

Departure from the System, Not the Ideology

In his letter shared publicly on social media platform X, Poonawalla emphasized that his exit is not driven by ideological differences or political resentment.

“Please read this letter in continuation with my last letter dated July 30, 2026, where I offered to resign unconditionally… Due to pressing emergency financial and personal circumstances, I will move into the private sector,” Poonawalla stated. “I am only leaving the Vyavastha (system), not the Vyakti (person) or Vichar (ideology).”

He expressed his “deepest gratitude, love, and affection” toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and party chief Nitin Nabin for their guidance over his five-year tenure with the party.

Reflecting on his journey within the BJP setup, Poonawalla highlighted his background as a self-made leader:

“In no other country and no other party would a story like mine, of a young, Pasmanda Muslim, non-dynast, even be possible.”

Tensions and the Transition to the Private Sector

While maintaining high regard for the top leadership, Poonawalla hinted at underlying friction within certain organizational channels. He noted that “the events of the last few days, courtesy certain individuals,” reinforced his determination to stand by his original decision to step down.

Poonawalla joined the BJP in late 2021 after leaving the Indian National Congress following a high-profile fallout over its leadership election process in 2017. Over the past five years, he emerged as one of the BJP’s most articulate and visible Muslim faces, frequently representing the party across national television debates, press conferences, and digital platforms.

Despite stepping away from active party politics, Poonawalla confirmed that he will continue to support Prime Minister Modi’s vision in whatever capacity possible outside the formal political apparatus.

Key Highlights of the Resignation

Original Resignation Date: July 30, 2026 (Initially rejected by the party).

Final Request: Submitted August 17, 2026, pressing for immediate acceptance.

Reason for Exit: Pressing financial and personal commitments requiring a move to the private sector.

Future Intent: Full support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political vision as a private citizen.
