How do you follow an Oscar-sweeping biographical drama like Oppenheimer? If you are Sir Christopher Nolan, you scale up by looking backward three millennia.
In his 13th feature film, The Odyssey (2026), Nolan tackles Homer’s foundational Greek myth. The result is a breathtaking, 172-minute epic that functions less like a classical adventure and more like a profound study of human grief.
This comprehensive Christopher Nolan The Odyssey movie review explores how the director has humanized a mythical king to deliver the most ambitious cinematic experience of the year.
The Plot: A Broken Soldier’s Toxic Journey Home
The film picks up immediately after the fall of Troy. Odysseus (Matt Damon), the brilliant but hubristic King of Ithaca, sets sail for home. He desperately wants to reunite with his fiercely resilient wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and his coming-of-age son, Telemachus (Tom Holland).
However, the Greek victory carries a heavy spiritual price tag. Having angered capricious deities, Odysseus and his battle-weary crew are thrown into a decade-long chaotic purgatory. They encounter iconic mythical terrors, including the monstrous Cyclops Polyphemus, the hypnotic Sirens, and the intoxicating sorceress Circe.
Yet, Nolan’s smartest narrative trick is treating these monsters as psychological extensions of war trauma. The physical storms generated by the gods are formidable. Even so, the true tempest is the “darkness of victory” rotting inside Odysseus’s soul.
The Cast: Matt Damon’s Career-Defining Performance
Nolan has assembled a staggering, star-studded ensemble cast.
Matt Damon turns his boyish face into a careworn mask of absolute exhaustion. He perfectly captures the contradictions of Odysseus—a master strategist consumed by intense survivor’s guilt.
Anne Hathaway brings a fierce, quiet dignity to Penelope. She must endlessly stall a palace overrun by greedy, predatory suitors.
Robert Pattinson stands out among the suitors as the chillingly sleek Antinous.
Tom Holland gives a deeply moving performance as Telemachus. He captures the vulnerability of a young man forced to search for a father he barely remembers.
Lupita Nyong’o delivers a show-stopping moment as Helen of Troy. She forcefully reclaims her agency, reminding the audience that a commercial war over trade routes was merely masked in her name.
Technical Wizardry: A True IMAX Revolution
From a technical standpoint, The Odyssey makes film history. It is the first blockbuster to be shot completely on IMAX 70mm film cameras.
Nolan’s frequent collaborator, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, entirely avoids traditional, postcard-blue ocean cliches. Instead, he frames vast, intimidating landscapes of deep ocean loneliness. The practical effects are stunning, capturing the brutal tactile reality of salt water and shifting sand.
Complementing the visuals is Ludwig Göransson’s score. The music rejects traditional orchestral sweeps in favor of a throbbing, primal thrumming of drums that ratchets up the existential dread.
The Verdict: Nolan’s Angriest and Best Film
At its core, The Odyssey acts as a brilliant Trojan horse. Universal Pictures marketed it as a monster-filled summer blockbuster, but Nolan delivers something far more spiritual and challenging. It is a brutal exploration of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the agonizing impossibility of returning home as the same person who left for war.
The middle section of the 172-minute runtime occasionally experiences pacing issues as the narrative mirrors the aimless drifting of its protagonist. Nonetheless, the patient, grand finale delivers a cathartic payoff decades in the making.
This is an unmissable, awe-inspiring achievement that will undoubtedly dominate the next awards season.
