NEW DELHI — Visionary auteur Christopher Nolan has rewritten cinematic history once again. His latest magnum opus, The Odyssey (2026), has officially amassed an astonishing $1.475 billion (approx. ₹14,070 crore) at the worldwide box office, securing its place as an unprecedented theatrical phenomenon.

With this monumental global haul, the mythological action-epic has shattered major industry records. It has officially surpassed Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.338 billion / approx. ₹12,760 crore) to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

A Legendary Box Office Run

Since its wide theatrical debut on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey—a stark, visceral re-imagining of Homer’s ancient Greek poem—has dominated multiplexes globally. Driven by premium format viewings on IMAX, word-of-mouth momentum, and critical acclaim, the film reached the $1 billion milestone in record time before pushing past the $1.4 billion threshold.

The Highest-Grossing R-Rated Films in Global History:

1. The Odyssey (2026) — $1.475 Billion (₹14,070 Crore)

2. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) — $1.338 Billion (₹12,760 Crore)

3. Joker (2019) — $1.074 Billion (₹10,240 Crore)

4. Oppenheimer (2023) — $977 Million (₹9,320 Crore)

The Power of International Audiences

While the film generated massive returns in North America, international markets proved to be the core engine behind its historic run. Overseas box offices contributed over $930 million (approx. ₹8,870 crore), propelled by exceptional turnouts across Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Featuring an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o, The Odyssey proves that high-budget, auteur-driven cinema geared toward adult audiences can out-perform traditional comic-book blockbusters at the global box office.

Universal Pictures and Nolan’s production banner, Syncopy, executed an extended 123-day theatrical window strategy for the film. Consequently, The Odyssey will not hit digital platforms or physical media formats until mid-November 2026, ensuring its box office dominance continues uninterrupted throughout the remainder of the season.
