The Martin Monopoly: How One Family Swept Three Seats Across Three Parties in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Political Bureau

CHENNAI – In the high-stakes theater of Dravidian politics, the 2026 elections have delivered a script that even the most seasoned analysts didn’t see coming. While the state grapples with a historic shift in power dynamics and the meteoric rise of Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), one family has managed to “future-proof” its political interests by winning seats under three entirely different ideological banners.

The family of Santiago Martin, the influential businessman often referred to as India’s “Lottery King,” has achieved a rare political trifecta. By fielding family members in different parties across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Martins have ensured they have a seat at every table—regardless of which alliance eventually forms the government.

The Triple Crown: Who Won Where?

The family’s strategy was as diversified as a corporate portfolio, spanning the AIADMK, the NDA, and the newly influential TVK.

The Richest MLA: Leema Rose’s Lalgudi Conquest

Leema Rose Martin made headlines long before the first vote was cast as one of the wealthiest candidates in the fray, declaring assets worth thousands of crores. Contesting on an AIADMK ticket in the DMK stronghold of Lalgudi, she managed to flip the seat by a narrow but decisive margin. Her victory is particularly significant as she successfully navigated a region traditionally dominated by the state’s veteran heavyweights.

The Kingmaker’s Aide: Aadhav Arjuna in Villivakkam

In Chennai, Santiago Martin’s son-in-law, Aadhav Arjuna, secured a dominant win in Villivakkam. Representing Vijay’s TVK—the party that has emerged as a primary power center in this election—Arjuna won by a significant margin of over 17,000 votes. As a key strategist for the TVK, Arjuna is widely seen as a trusted lieutenant to Vijay and a prime candidate for a ministerial berth in any potential coalition.

The Puducherry Bridge: Jose Charles Martin

Completing the trifecta, Martin’s son, Jose Charles Martin, won the Kamaraj Nagar seat in Puducherry. Running under the banner of his own party, the Latchiya Jananayaka Katchi (LJK), in alliance with the NDA, he secured a comfortable victory. This win extends the family’s influence beyond the Tamil Nadu border and into the Union Territory.

Strategic Diversification or Political Necessity?

Political analysts suggest this is a calculated move to safeguard the family’s vast interests. By having a presence in the AIADMK (the established opposition), the TVK (the rising power), and the NDA (the federal power), the Martin family has effectively hedged its bets against political volatility.

“This isn’t just about winning seats; it’s about institutionalizing influence,” says a Chennai-based political observer. “In an assembly where every vote counts toward a majority, having family members in three different camps makes the Martin family one of the most powerful ‘independent’ blocs in the region.”

As Tamil Nadu enters a period of intense political maneuvering to form a government, the Martins have already won their election. For them, it appears that no matter who occupies Fort St. George, they have successfully secured a path to the corridors of power.
