CHENNAI – In a seismic shift that has rewritten the political destiny of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay—the cinema icon turned political juggernaut—was sworn in today as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The ceremony, held at a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, marks the first time since 1967 that a leader from outside the DMK-AIADMK formations has ascended to the state’s highest office.
A Historic Mandate
The swearing-in follows a high-stakes week of negotiations after the May 4 election results delivered a hung assembly. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, stunning veteran pollsters.
To bridge the gap to the 118-seat majority mark, Vijay successfully stitched together a coalition supported by:
• Congress (5 seats)
• VCK, CPI, CPM, and IUML (2 seats each)
With a total of 120 MLAs backing him, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy at exactly 10:00 AM. As Vijay uttered the words “C. Joseph Vijay ennum naan…” (I, C. Joseph Vijay…), the stadium erupted in a deafening roar of whistles and cheers from thousands of emotionally charged supporters.
The First 100 Minutes: Welfare and Safety
Wasting no time, Chief Minister Vijay moved straight to the State Secretariat to sign three landmark files, fulfilling core campaign promises:
1. Energy Reform: Provision of 200 units of free electricity for all domestic consumers.
2. Public Safety: Formation of a Special Task Force for Women’s Safety.
3. Social Health: Establishment of an Anti-Narcotics Unit to tackle the drug menace in the state.
The New Cabinet
A lean cabinet of nine ministers took the oath alongside Vijay. The team is a strategic blend of grassroots loyalists and seasoned administrators, including N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, and veteran K.A. Sengottaiyan.
The presence of Congress leader and LoP Rahul Gandhi at the ceremony underscored the national significance of this transition, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to congratulate the new CM, promising the Centre’s cooperation for the state’s development.
End of a Duopoly
For over five decades, Tamil Nadu’s political landscape was a pendulum swinging between the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s victory, fueled by a sophisticated digital campaign and a massive youth turnout, represents a “third way” that prioritizes secularism and egalitarianism over traditional Dravidian rivalry.
While former CM M.K. Stalin has promised to lead a “constructive opposition,” the spotlight remains firmly on Vijay. He has been directed by the Governor to prove his majority on the floor of the House by May 13.
As the sun sets over the Marina today, Tamil Nadu enters uncharted territory—led by a man who has successfully transitioned from the “King of the Box Office” to the Chief of the State.
