CHENNAI — In a landmark moment for Tamil Nadu politics, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay successfully proved his majority on the floor of the House today, May 13, 2026. Leading the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay secured a resounding 144 votes in favor of his confidence motion, comfortably surpassing the required majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
The Numbers Game: A Strong Mandate
While the TVK emerged from the 2026 elections with 108 seats, the floor test showcased a broader base of support for the actor-turned-politician. The motion was supported by a coalition of traditional allies and surprising defectors. This included the TVK’s core strength, alongside support from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.
A significant rebellion within the AIADMK proved to be the turning point, as 25 MLAs defied their party whip to vote in favor of Vijay Joseph. The opposition faced a fractured front, with only 22 MLAs voting against the motion. The DMK, led by Udhayanidhi Stalin, staged a strategic walkout before the voting commenced, effectively lowering the threshold for victory.
High Drama in the House
The session was marked by intense debate and high-voltage drama. Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar presided over the proceedings as the AIADMK camp split wide open. While party leadership alleged “horse-trading,” Vijay countered by stating his administration would function with the “speed of a horse” but never indulge in “horse-trading,” emphasizing a government rooted in public service
“This is a makkal alliance (people’s alliance). Our government will work for every citizen of Tamil Nadu, including those who did not vote for us today,” CM Vijay Joseph declared in his victory speech.
A New Era of Governance
With the floor test hurdle cleared, the TVK government is now set to focus on its legislative agenda. Key issues raised during the session included the potential restructuring of state entrance exams and new social welfare policies. The victory solidifies Vijay Joseph’s transition from a cinematic icon to a formidable political leader who has successfully navigated the complex alliance arithmetic of Dravidian politics.
