From Bus Conductor to Demigod: Rajinikanth’s Golden Jubilee in Indian Cinema

By Kushinara M D | New Delhi Chronicle

Fifty years ago, a young man from the streets of Bangalore walked onto a Chennai film set with nothing but grit in his heart and fire in his eyes. That man—Shivaji Rao Gaekwad—would soon become Rajinikanth, a name that would echo in theatres, homes, and hearts across India and beyond.

Today, Rajinikanth is more than a superstar. He is a living legend, a symbol of hope for the underdog, and a cultural phenomenon whose story feels like a movie itself. From selling tickets as a bus conductor to becoming the face that sells out cinemas worldwide, his journey is a testament to the power of dreams.

The Rise of the People’s Hero

Born into poverty, Rajinikanth worked as a coolie and later as a bus conductor, often entertaining passengers with his flair and charm. A friend’s faith in his talent changed everything—sending him to the Madras Film Institute, where destiny introduced him to legendary director K Balachander. In 1975, his debut in Apoorva Raagangal lit the first spark of what would become an unstoppable fire.

Nearly 170 films later, Rajinikanth still commands screens like no other. His latest release, Coolie (14 August 2025), mirrors his own life’s arc—a working-class hero standing tall against oppression, armed only with courage and heart.

Devotion Beyond Stardom

For his fans, Rajinikanth is not just an actor—he is Thalaiva, their leader, their guiding light. Temples are built in his honour. Giant cut-outs are bathed in milk as if he were a deity. In Japan, where his film Muthu sparked a frenzy, his smile is met with the same reverence as that of a local icon.

Fan clubs—more than 50,000 strong—don’t just celebrate his films; they carry out blood donation drives, relief efforts, and community work in his name. Watching a Rajinikanth film is not a screening—it’s a festival. Coins fly at the screen, camphor burns, flowers rain down, and strangers dance in the aisles like long-lost brothers united by a shared devotion.

The Rajini Magic

Whether playing the charming anti-hero of Moondru Mudichu, the righteous avenger of Billa, the saintly figure in Sri Raghavendrar, or the sci-fi marvel of Enthiran, Rajinikanth transforms every role into a legend. His mannerisms—sunglasses twirls, cigarette flips, that unmistakable pause before a punchline—have become cultural trademarks.

Critics may have once called him just a “Style King,” but his enduring appeal lies in something far deeper: the values he stands for—loyalty, humility, courage, and justice.

A Star Who Never Chased Power

In Tamil Nadu, where cinema and politics are entwined, Rajinikanth has remained a rare figure—courted by politicians but never owned by politics. His voice carries weight, yet his power lies in his moral standing, not in electoral battles.

Fifty Years, Infinite Impact

From the cramped lanes of Bangalore to the biggest stages in world cinema, Rajinikanth’s journey is a reminder that greatness isn’t born—it’s forged in struggle, discipline, and the unshakable belief that dreams are worth chasing.

As he marks half a century in films, fans see not just an anniversary but the celebration of a man who became a movement. For them, Rajinikanth is proof that gods sometimes walk among us—and wear sunglasses.
