Bihar Elections 2025: Nitish Kumar’s Legacy, Tejashwi’s Challenge, and What’s at Stake for Every Major Player

By Milind Dharmasena | New Delhi Chronicle

The Battle for Bihar Begins

As the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 approach, the political temperature in the state has reached boiling point. Polling will be held on November 6 and 11, with counting scheduled for November 14. What unfolds over these few weeks could redefine not just Bihar’s power structure but the national political landscape ahead of the 2029 general elections.

Nitish Kumar: A Legacy on the Line

For Nitish Kumar, this election is arguably the most crucial of his career. After nearly two decades in power—marked by dramatic alliance shifts, development pushes, and governance fatigue—the Janata Dal (United) chief faces the toughest test of his political life.

While Kumar’s image as the “Vikas Purush” once symbolized Bihar’s resurgence, questions now swirl around his relevance, health, and the state’s unmet promises. Anti-incumbency sentiments are mounting, and the JD(U)-BJP alliance will need to counter the perception of stagnation and political inconsistency.

A victory could cement Kumar’s reputation as one of modern India’s most adaptable politicians. A loss, however, might mark the twilight of his political career—and push JD(U) further into dependence on the BJP.

Tejashwi Yadav: The Challenger Rising

At 36, Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is positioning himself as the face of a new Bihar. The son of Lalu Prasad Yadav is banking on young voters and a yearning for change after Nitish’s long reign.

In the 2020 Bihar elections, RJD fell just short of forming the government, losing by a wafer-thin margin of about 12,700 votes across the state. This time, Tejashwi’s strategy revolves around expanding his party’s base beyond the traditional Yadav-Muslim vote bank to include non-Yadav OBCs, Dalits, and unemployed youth.

If he can unite opposition voices under one credible leadership umbrella, the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) could become a formidable force against the NDA.

Rahul Gandhi and the Congress: Fighting for Relevance

For the Congress Party, Bihar represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Rahul Gandhi is keen to prove that his party remains a viable force in Hindi heartland politics. The Congress will be counting on its grassroots networks and issue-based campaigning—particularly on unemployment, caste census, and price rise—to regain lost ground.

However, the key test for Congress lies in coordination. Can it align effectively with RJD and Left partners without appearing overshadowed? Its performance here could influence alliances and perceptions ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Chirag Paswan: Seeking Political Identity

Chirag Paswan, leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), is attempting to move beyond his late father’s legacy and assert himself as an independent political figure. His earlier tactics—contesting solo and carving out a “Bihar First, Bihari First” image—earned him attention but limited returns.

In 2025, Chirag aims to translate his Lok Sabha strength into Assembly relevance. A strong performance could make him a key power broker; a weak one could reduce him to a supporting role within the NDA fold.

Prashant Kishor: From Strategist to Politician

After crafting winning campaigns for others, Prashant Kishor is now testing his own political appeal through the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP). His bold decision to contest all 243 assembly seats without alliances marks a direct challenge to Bihar’s traditional caste-based politics.

Kishor’s campaign focuses on governance reform, local empowerment, and the promise of a “Naya Bihar.” However, translating crowd enthusiasm into electoral numbers will be his real challenge. Even a modest success could reshape Bihar’s political narrative.

What’s at Stake in Bihar 2025
• For Nitish Kumar: A verdict on governance and consistency.
• For Tejashwi Yadav: A chance to prove he can lead Bihar’s next generation.
• For Rahul Gandhi: Testing ground for Congress revival.
• For Chirag Paswan: A battle for political legitimacy.
• For Prashant Kishor: A debut that could define his future in politics.

The Road Ahead

With Bihar elections 2025 poised to be one of the most closely fought contests in recent memory, every speech, alliance tweak, and manifesto promise will matter. Beyond who wins or loses, this election could redefine leadership in Bihar—and potentially reset equations for national politics in the years ahead
