In a proud moment for Indian cinema, legendary Malayalam actor Mohanlal has been named the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, the country’s most prestigious recognition in film. The honour will be conferred during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the decision, noting Mohanlal’s exceptional contribution across acting, production, and direction. Over the years, his versatility and dedication have elevated not only Malayalam cinema but also Indian cinema as a whole.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the veteran star on social media, calling him “a leading light of Malayalam cinema and theatre.” The Prime Minister highlighted how Mohanlal’s artistic brilliance has touched audiences across languages, from Malayalam to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
With a career spanning more than four decades and over 400 films, Mohanlal has long been regarded as one of India’s most celebrated performers. His earlier national honours include the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019, cementing his legacy as a cultural icon.
