In a significant political move ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP has appointed two former senior Congress leaders—Raj Kumar Chauhan and Arvinder Singh Lovely—to prominent positions in the Delhi government.
• Raj Kumar Chauhan, a four-term MLA from Mangolpuri and former minister in Sheila Dikshit’s cabinet, has been appointed chairperson of the Delhi Village Development Board.
• Arvinder Singh Lovely, former MLA from Gandhi Nagar and a long-serving minister in the previous Congress government, will now head the Trans Yamuna Development Board.
These appointments, approved by the Delhi Cabinet under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, carry ministerial status and are seen as part of the BJP’s strategy to integrate experienced leaders who recently switched sides. Both Chauhan and Lovely bring strong organizational knowledge and influential support bases, which the BJP aims to leverage as it consolidates its position in the capital.
Chauhan is known for his influence among Scheduled Caste voters and residents of outer Delhi, while Lovely has deep connections within the Sikh community and in northeast Delhi. Their inclusion is expected to help the BJP expand its reach across diverse constituencies and strengthen its administrative presence in the city.
Why it matters
• It signals that the BJP is willing to accommodate former rivals who bring electoral value and governance experience.
• The appointments bolster the party’s development-focused narrative in key regions of Delhi.
• It gives the BJP a chance to tap into networks previously aligned with Congress support bases.
What’s next
Both Chauhan and Lovely are expected to begin implementing development initiatives through their respective boards, playing a crucial role in the BJP’s outreach and preparations for the upcoming elections.
