“She Could Have Been Lost to That Moment”: Manoj K. Jayan Recalls a Close Call on Set with Manju Warrier

The 1996 romantic drama Sallapam marked a turning point in Malayalam cinema, introducing audiences to a young and compelling new talent—Manju Warrier. At just 17, she stepped into the role of Radha, a spirited yet tragic village girl, delivering a performance that would win her critical acclaim and the Kerala Film Critics’ Award for Best Actress.

Nearly thirty years later, her co-star Manoj K. Jayan has opened up about a terrifying moment that unfolded during filming—a scene that could have ended in tragedy.

In a recent interview, Jayan recounted the filming of a dramatic sequence where Radha, devastated by love, stands on railway tracks as a train approaches. Warrier, fully immersed in the role, pushed herself to such a degree that the line between performance and danger blurred.

“You could see immediately that she wasn’t just acting—she was living the part,” Jayan said. “It was her debut as a lead, but her intensity was something else. During that shot, things got out of hand.”

The scene was captured late in the production schedule, with a real train barreling down the tracks uncomfortably close to the actors. According to Jayan, he had to hold on to Warrier’s arm with all his strength to keep her from stepping too far. “If I’d lost my grip even for a moment, she might not have made it,” he recalled. “I knew I couldn’t let go.”

Once the director yelled “cut,” both actors were left physically and emotionally exhausted. Jayan admitted he was so rattled that he almost chastised her out of fear. “But the shot came out flawlessly. Everyone on set applauded—it was unforgettable.”

Reflecting on the incident, Jayan emphasized how it revealed Warrier’s deep commitment to her craft. “If I hadn’t been there that day,” he said, “the industry might have lost an extraordinary artist before her journey even began.”
