R. Madhavan Weighs In on Hindi‑Marathi Language Controversy

New Delhi, 14 July 2025 – Actor R. Madhavan has added his voice to the ongoing debate over the role of Hindi and Marathi in Maharashtra, describing his own multilingual background as proof that language need not divide.

Speaking to IANS during press promotions for his Netflix release Aap Jaisa Koi, Madhavan explained, “I have never experienced any problem because of language. I speak Tamil, I speak Hindi. I have studied in Kolhapur and I’ve learned Marathi as well. So whether I know a language—or don’t—I’ve never faced issues.”  

The discussion stems from Maharashtra’s recent government directive—implemented in April—as part of the national three-language education policy. This order required government primary schools to teach Hindi as a third language alongside Marathi and English. The decision triggered protests and online backlash, particularly after viral videos surfaced showing Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) members confronting non-Marathi speakers. 

Madhavan, a native Tamil speaker raised in Jamshedpur and Kolhapur, emphasised how his multilingual upbringing and career across India have benefited from linguistic flexibility. He urged for greater recognition of India’s diverse languages and understanding of the shared national identity they build. 

Several Bollywood figures have responded to the controversy:
• Ajay Devgn, attending the Son of Sardaar 2 trailer launch, responded cryptically with the line “Aata Majhi Satakli” when asked about the row. 
• Shilpa Shetty acknowledged awareness of the issue, noting the film industry’s multilingual nature and her own Maharashtrian roots. 
• Udit Narayan reflected on his time living in Maharashtra, calling it his “karma bhoomi,” said he values every Indian language equally. 

Context on the controversy

Maharashtra’s language policy reform—making Hindi mandatory in primary schools—ignited objections from certain linguistic and political groups advocating for Marathi. Tensions escalated when footage of alleged MNS intimidation of Hindi speakers circulated widely on social media. 

Madhavan’s recent work

Madhavan is currently promoting Aap Jaisa Koi (released 11 July on Netflix), co-starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, which has received a mixed critical response. He is also slated to appear in the supernatural thriller Shaitaan (with Ajay Devgn) and Dhurandhar, alongside Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal.
