NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, 56, has officially announced his marriage to renowned journalist Nidhi Razdan. Breaking the news to his followers on social media, the J&K CM shared a heartwarming photograph with Razdan, captioning it simply: “A new journey began yesterday.”
The announcement marks a significant personal milestone for the 56-year-old leader, coming just a day after the private ceremony and drawing widespread public attention across political and media circles.
A New Beginning Following Legal Settlement
This new chapter for the Chief Minister follows closely on the heels of the formal conclusion of his previous marriage.
Three months prior to the wedding announcement, the Supreme Court of India granted Omar Abdullah a divorce from his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah. On July 31, 2026, the apex court dissolved the marriage after both parties informed the bench that they had reached a mutual agreement to end their relationship, settle all pending disputes, and withdraw mutual legal cases.
The case had reached the Supreme Court after Abdullah challenged a Delhi High Court decision that had initially refused to grant him a divorce. During the final proceedings, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the couple, submitted a joint application seeking the dissolution of marriage by mutual consent under Article 142 of the Constitution.
Background and Personal History
Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah were originally married in 1994 after meeting while working at The Oberoi hotel in New Delhi. The couple shares two sons, Zahir and Zamir.
After living separately since 2009, Omar Abdullah publicly announced their separation in 2011. The Supreme Court noted during its July proceedings that the couple had lived apart for over a decade before arriving at an amicable legal settlement.
With this private wedding ceremony now public, well-wishers and political figures have begun extending their congratulatory messages to Omar Abdullah and Nidhi Razdan as they embark on their new journey together.
