NEW DELHI — In a major development, popular YouTuber and social activist Dhruv Rathee was arrested by police authorities early Saturday morning from his Gurugram residence. The detention came just hours before a planned high-profile demonstration at Jantar Mantar organized by the youth political outfit Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
The crackdowns have severely impacted public infrastructure across the National Capital Region (NCR). Authorities suspended local mobile internet services within a four-kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar, invoked Section 163 (formerly Section 144), and restricted public transport routes, including metro and train services leading toward Central Delhi.
Why Was Dhruv Rathee Arrested?
Police sources confirmed that Rathee was taken into custody in a joint action by Delhi and Gurugram police officers as he prepared to join thousands of demonstrators at the capital’s central protest venue.
The protest, spearheaded by the CJP movement, demands accountability regarding recent revisions to national electoral rolls. Organizers have alleged widespread voter list irregularities favoring the ruling party—allegations that both the Election Commission of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have firmly denied.
Rathee, who recently released a viral video urging youth participation in the demonstration, was flagged by law enforcement after authorities refused permission for the gathering citing public order concerns.
“The arrest is part of an aggressive, citywide crackdown designed to silence democratic dissent,” said a CJP spokesperson in a statement released on Saturday morning. “We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dhruv Rathee and the hundreds of youth activists currently held.”
Mass Security Mobilization in Central Delhi
Security agencies deployed over 50,000 personnel across strategic entry points in Delhi to prevent protesters from gathering. Reports indicate that around 200 demonstrators and key organizers have been detained from various border checkposts and transit hubs.
Despite the heavy police presence, CJP leadership announced the continuation of their movement, calling the situation “Jantar Mantar 2.0” and vowing to push forward with peaceful civil demonstrations.
As law enforcement maintains strict vigil across the NCR, political opposition parties are expected to raise concerns over the preemptive detentions and communication blackouts.
