India’s Election Commission Under Fire: Internal Rift and SIR Voters List Controversy Detailed

By Neetha Bopaiah

New Delhi Chronicle

The Election Commission of India (ECI), long regarded as one of the country’s most trusted public institutions, finds itself embroiled in a fresh wave of controversy. A dramatic political storm has erupted following reports detailing severe internal friction among its top leadership, sparking renewed demands from opposition leaders for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The three-member election body—comprising CEC Gyanesh Kumar alongside Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi—is currently facing unprecedented scrutiny. The friction centers on the execution of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a sweeping nationwide drive designed to clean up and update the electoral database.

Internal Discord and Unilateral Decision-Making

According to recent revelations, Commissioners Sandhu and Joshi raised serious objections after being excluded from key policy decisions. Reports indicate that over the past 10 months, there were at least 14 instances where both commissioners were kept in the dark regarding critical commission operations.

In an unprecedented move, the two commissioners reportedly dispatched a formal letter of complaint to the Government of India’s top bureaucrat, the Chief Secretary, expressing their grievances over the decision-making process.

In response to the growing fallout, the ECI released a brief official statement clarifying that “differing views” are a normal part of its “decision-making process.” Meanwhile, both Commissioners Sandhu and Joshi have maintained public silence on the matter.

Former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi, a persistent critic of the SIR exercise, weighed in on the development, remarking to news agency PTI that he had long wondered why the two election commissioners had remained silent despite ongoing operational issues.

Controversy Surrounding the Nationwide SIR Exercise

The internal rift comes at a delicate period as the commission conducts the Special Intensive Revision across India. The ECI maintains that the primary objective of the SIR is to remove duplicate, deceased, and ineligible voters from the rolls, noting that a comprehensive audit of this scale has not occurred in nearly 25 years.

However, the execution of the program has drawn severe criticism:

Mass Deletions: Approximately 130 million names have been removed from voter rosters across the nation, raising alarms over potential voter suppression.

Bureaucratic Hurdles: Citizens across multiple states have reported missing names, pointing out that the re-registration protocols under SIR require extensive documentation that many vulnerable voters lack.

Allegations of Bias: Opposition parties allege that the revision exercise is being manipulated to favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by selectively targeting specific voter demographics.

Both the BJP and the Election Commission have firmly rejected all allegations of political bias or manipulation.

Opposition Demands Resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The revelations of internal friction have re-energized opposition coalitions, who argue that the integrity of India’s democratic process is being compromised. Opposition leaders held demonstrations on Wednesday questioning the impartiality of the ECI, with several calling for the immediate resignation—and in some cases, the arrest—of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

As public scrutiny intensifies, the ongoing rift within the top echelon of the ECI raises fundamental questions about administrative transparency and the management of India’s electoral infrastructure moving forward.
