Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir
In an extraordinary display of courage and discipline, Tyson, a highly trained German Shepherd serving with the Indian Army’s elite 2 Para (Special Forces), played a decisive role in a successful counter-terror operation in the rugged Chhatroo terrain of Kishtwar district.
Acting on precise intelligence inputs, troops launched a carefully planned search operation to track down terrorists hiding in the dense forested area. Tyson was deployed to scout a concealed hideout located deep within the difficult terrain. As the K9 crawled forward to confirm the presence of militants, the terrorists opened fire, striking him in the leg.
Despite sustaining a serious injury, Tyson refused to retreat. Displaying remarkable resilience and training, the wounded K9 continued advancing and alerted the troops to the exact location of the hideout. His actions enabled the soldiers to engage the terrorists effectively and neutralise all three operatives belonging to the banned terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed.
The operation resulted in the elimination of a senior terrorist commander along with two associates, dealing a significant blow to terror activities in the region. Security officials said Tyson’s bravery was instrumental in preventing potential casualties among the troops and ensuring the mission’s success.
Following the encounter, Tyson was immediately provided medical assistance by Army personnel and later evacuated to a military veterinary facility for advanced treatment. He is reported to be stable and recovering under expert care.
The Indian Army has praised the K9’s exceptional courage, highlighting the critical role played by canine soldiers in modern counter-insurgency operations. Tyson’s actions have since drawn widespread admiration, symbolising the unwavering bond between soldiers and their four-legged comrades on the frontlines.
