NEW DELHI — Renowned Bollywood singer Mika Singh has stepped into the heated national debate over stray dog management with a massive humanitarian gesture. Taking to social media, the artist announced he is prepared to donate 10 acres of his personal land to establish a safe haven for street dogs, while simultaneously urging the Supreme Court of India to ensure humane treatment for animals.
The announcement comes at a critical juncture as the apex court hears a suo motu case regarding the “stray dog menace” in India, balancing public safety against animal rights.
A ‘Safe Haven’ for India’s Street Dogs
Mika Singh, a long-time advocate for animal welfare, shared his vision for a dedicated sanctuary that goes beyond mere sheltering. His offer includes land specifically intended for:
• Medical Care & Rehabilitation: Facilities for injured and sick dogs.
• Sterilization Units: Supporting the government’s Animal Birth Control (ABC) program.
• Safe Housing: Spacious areas to prevent the overcrowding often seen in municipal pounds.
However, the singer emphasized that land is only the first step. “I am fully prepared to donate 10 acres exclusively for the care and welfare of dogs,” Mika stated. “My only request is support in terms of proper manpower and professional caretakers who can responsibly look after these animals.”
Appeal to the Supreme Court
The singer’s intervention follows recent oral observations from a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria. On Tuesday, the Court warned state governments of heavy compensation for dog-bite victims and suggested that those who feed stray dogs should be held liable for their actions.
Mika Singh’s appeal strikes a different chord, requesting the Court to refrain from any measures that could lead to the mass harm of canines. He advocated for a compassionate approach, suggesting that with the right infrastructure, stray dogs can be managed without resorting to cruelty.
The Legal Context: Public Safety vs. Animal Rights
The Supreme Court has recently clarified that it has not ordered a “blanket removal” of dogs but is pushing for the strict implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023.
While the Court has directed the relocation of dogs from “high-footfall” areas like schools and hospitals to designated shelters, it remains committed to the scientific process of vaccination and sterilization. Mika Singh’s 10-acre offer provides a potential blueprint for the kind of private-public partnership needed to solve the current shortage of adequate sheltering space.
What’s Next?
Animal welfare organizations have hailed the singer’s move, hoping it encourages other high-net-worth individuals to contribute resources toward ethical animal management. The Supreme Court is expected to continue its hearing on the matter later this week, with a focus on framing a national framework that ensures both citizen safety and animal dignity.
