Karnataka Congress Set for KPCC Leadership Change: Satish Jarkiholi , Santosh Lad Lead Race for State President Post

By Sneha Gowda

Bangalore | 21 December

The Karnataka Congress is on the cusp of a major organisational reshuffle, with strong indications that a new Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president could be named soon. Several Congress MLAs and senior party leaders have reportedly suggested the names of Cabinet Ministers Santosh Lad and Satish Jarkiholi to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as the leading contenders for the key state unit post.

The likely leadership change comes as the party seeks to strengthen its organisational structure ahead of forthcoming local body elections and future electoral challenges. Party insiders say there is a growing view that the KPCC needs a leader who can combine administrative coordination with mass mobilisation and ideological clarity.

This internal churning has been further energised by a statewide survey conducted in October by reputed poll agency QUEST WAVE. The survey, which assessed leadership preference among Congress cadres and sections of the general public across Karnataka, ranked Santosh Lad and Satish Jarkiholi at the top. Notably, Santosh Lad enjoyed a narrow edge, reflecting wider acceptance across regions.

According to party sources, Lad’s rising popularity is linked to his public advocacy for a 75% reservation cap in Karnataka, a stance that struck a chord with large sections of the masses and party workers. Equally significant is his growing prominence as an emerging OBC leader, with leaders across party lines noting his acceptance across communities, cutting through traditional caste and regional barriers.

Santosh Lad: Emerging OBC Leader with Mass Appeal

A two-time MLA from Dharwad and a serving Cabinet Minister, Santosh Lad has increasingly positioned himself as a policy-driven leader with strong grassroots connect. His articulation of the 75% reservation demand, combined with his broader social outreach, has helped him gain traction among OBC groups while also retaining support across caste and community lines.

Within the Congress, Lad is seen as part of the party’s next-generation leadership—someone who blends governance experience with political messaging and organisational discipline. His cross-community acceptance is viewed as a key asset at a time when the party is keen on broad-based consolidation.

Satish Jarkiholi: Veteran Mass Leader with Organisational Strength

Satish Jarkiholi continues to be one of the most influential mass leaders within the Karnataka Congress. A senior MLA and Cabinet Minister, he commands a formidable grassroots network, particularly in north Karnataka.

Known for his firm social justice positioning and deep organisational experience, Jarkiholi enjoys strong support among party cadres and backward-class communities. Many in the party see him as a stabilising figure capable of reinforcing the Congress’ booth-level machinery and maintaining internal cohesion.

High Command Decision Awaited

While the final decision rests with the Congress high command, political observers believe a leadership announcement may be imminent. Factors such as regional balance, caste equations, cadre morale and public perception are expected to influence the call.

As anticipation builds, the Karnataka Congress appears headed for a leadership reset—one that could play a decisive role in shaping the party’s organisational and electoral future in the state.
