Opposition Alliance Locks in Tejashwi Yadav as Chief Ministerial Face in Bihar

By New Delhi Chronicle Staff

The opposition coalition in Bihar has agreed to project Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. With internal debates over seat distribution lingering until the eleventh hour, this development signals a strategic consolidation.

According to sources within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), all alliance partners have backed Yadav’s elevation, with a formal announcement expected shortly. The bloc plans to launch its campaign under the banner “Chalo Bihar, Badlein Bihar” (“Let’s move Bihar, Let’s change Bihar”).

Seat-sharing crunch comes to an end

The announcement comes as the alliance wrapped up difficult negotiations over seat allocations. As many as a dozen constituencies remained contested between partners until the final hours, complicating earlier efforts to present a unified front.

Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot personally traveled to Patna to mediate the differences. He later described the remaining disagreements as mere “friendly fights” within a 243-seat Assembly context. Under the final tally, the RJD will contest 143 seats and the Congress 61.

Strategic messaging & outreach

With Yadav at the helm, the alliance looks to sharpen its messaging around change and development. Yadav has pledged to institutionalise benefits for women mobilisers, scrap certain loans, offer interest-free credit schemes, and grant insurance coverage if the alliance is victorious. Meanwhile, the opposition’s rival coalition, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), continues to maintain its own cohesive image, positioning Nitish Kumar as its chief ministerial face without reported internal friction.
