JMM Rift Over Seat-Sharing Sparks Political Reactions; BJP Targets Mahagathbandhan’s ‘Arrogance’

New Delhi:Bihar’s political landscape saw fresh turbulence this week after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) distanced itself from the Mahagathbandhan alliance, citing dissatisfaction over seat-sharing negotiations. The move prompted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to attack the opposition bloc, labelling its leadership “arrogant” and “out of touch” ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections.

Party insiders said the JMM’s decision followed weeks of inconclusive talks with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress. According to sources, the JMM felt short-changed in the allocation of constituencies and accused its allies of sidelining smaller partners during key discussions.

BJP leaders quickly capitalised on the rift. “Bihar is saved from the arrogance of those who only care about power,” a party spokesperson declared, arguing that the opposition’s internal divisions exposed its lack of unity and leadership.

The Mahagathbandhan, which also includes the Left parties, has not released an official response to the JMM’s statement, though senior Congress leaders have reportedly been tasked with damage control to prevent further defections.

Alliance Strains and Political Optics

Analysts say the episode highlights the fragility of Bihar’s opposition bloc and may hurt its image among voters seeking stability. “Even minor partners breaking ranks can have an outsized impact in a high-stakes election,” observed a Patna-based political analyst. “The BJP will frame this as proof that the opposition can’t manage a coalition, let alone a government.”

The BJP, leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has meanwhile been projecting itself as a disciplined and united coalition. Senior party functionaries say the NDA’s “clarity of purpose” contrasts with what they call the “chaotic and opportunistic” politics of the rival camp.

Looking Ahead

With only months remaining before the state goes to the polls, both alliances face critical deadlines for finalising seat-sharing and candidate lists. For the Mahagathbandhan, restoring confidence among allies may be as important as campaigning itself.

The BJP, on the other hand, is expected to continue framing its message around governance, stability, and alliance cohesion — themes that have historically resonated with Bihar’s electorate.

Whether the opposition can regroup and project a unified front could determine how competitive the 2025 contest ultimately becomes.
