Jaipur : Krishna Kumar Janu’s six-year suspension follows a viral video in which he accused the party of sidelining veteran leaders and disrespecting Dhankhar, Malik.
In a rare public rebuke of its own, the Rajasthan unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has stripped Krishna Kumar Janu of his spokesperson role and suspended his party membership for six years. The move caps weeks of internal discussion after Janu accused the BJP of mishandling the legacies of prominent leaders and showing insufficient respect toward former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and the late Satya Pal Malik, a former governor in several states.
Details of the Suspension
The suspension order was issued after a disciplinary process that began with a show-cause notice on June 20. Party insiders say Janu’s response failed to satisfy the leadership, which viewed his comments as damaging to the BJP’s public image. The viral video that triggered the controversy captured Janu questioning why influential Jat leaders within the party remained silent about the alleged snubs, including the absence of full ceremonial honours at Malik’s funeral.
The Controversial Remarks
In his speech, Janu suggested that Dhankhar’s departure from the vice-presidential office had been underplayed and compared it to the treatment of Malik. He broadened his criticism to accuse the party of marginalising senior figures such as L.K. Advani and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje — both of whom have seen reduced visibility in recent years.
Political Context
The decision to act against Janu comes at a time when Rajasthan politics is especially volatile. With assembly elections in the state still fresh in public memory and the next general elections on the horizon, BJP leaders have been working to project unity and discipline. The party is keen to avoid giving opponents an opportunity to exploit internal rifts, particularly in regions where community representation plays a decisive role in voter sentiment.
A Signal to Party Cadre
Party functionaries describe the suspension as a reminder that internal grievances should be handled within party forums, not aired in public. While dissent among members is not unusual, public criticism of the party’s top brass is generally seen as a breach of discipline — especially when it involves leaders holding constitutional positions.
The state BJP has not commented on whether Janu will have the opportunity to appeal the decision, but sources indicate the suspension is intended to be a clear message to the cadre: disagreements must be managed privately to protect the party’s image.
