Chandigarh, July 20: Anmol Gagan Maan, a prominent figure in Punjab’s political and entertainment circles, has announced her departure from politics, stepping down as the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Kharar.
Maan submitted her resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Sunday, officially bringing her political career to a close. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, she stated, “With a heavy heart, I have decided to move on from politics. I have requested that my resignation be accepted by the Speaker.” She went on to express her continued support for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), extending best wishes to the party and the state government.
First elected to the Punjab Assembly in 2022, Maan was a cabinet minister under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration. During her tenure, she held key roles across several departments including Tourism & Culture, Investment Promotion, Labour, and Hospitality. However, she was among four ministers removed during a cabinet reshuffle in September 2024.
Before entering politics, Maan enjoyed a successful career in the Punjabi music industry, known for tracks such as “Suit,” “Ghaint Purpose,” and “Sherni.” She joined the AAP in July 2020 and quickly rose through its ranks, becoming co-president of the party’s youth wing. She also lent her voice to the party’s campaign anthem ahead of the 2022 state elections.
Her political debut was marked by a strong win in Kharar, where she defeated the Shiromani Akali Dal’s Ranjit Singh Gill by over 37,000 votes.
Originally from Mansa district, Maan recently tied the knot with advocate Shahbaaz Singh Sohi in June 2024. Notably, just days before her resignation, she held a meeting with AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, describing it as an “in-depth discussion.”
Maan’s departure adds a new dimension to Punjab’s political landscape, as one of the few artist-turned-legislators steps away from public office after a short but eventful tenure.
