Mumbai: Tensions flared in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area on Wednesday after a group of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers allegedly assaulted a local shopkeeper over a WhatsApp status they claimed was derogatory toward the Marathi language and community.
The incident came to light after a video of the assault surfaced on social media Thursday, drawing widespread criticism and concern.
According to sources, the shopkeeper, reportedly a member of the Marwari community, had posted a status message that some MNS workers found offensive. The group confronted him at his shop, questioned him about the content, and allegedly assaulted him when they were not satisfied with his explanation.
Police have yet to confirm if any formal complaint has been filed. The incident has sparked a debate on freedom of expression and rising intolerance over cultural sentiments.
