Bhagwat’s ‘75 and Out’ Remark Sparks Political Chatter Over Modi’s Future

NDC DESK

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent comment that leaders should step aside at 75 has stirred political speculation, especially as both he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi turn 75 this September.

Speaking at a book launch in Nagpur, Bhagwat said, “When you turn 75, it means you should stop now and make way for others,” referencing late RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle’s belief in graceful retirement. Though not naming anyone, Bhagwat’s timing and message have been interpreted by many as a subtle nudge toward PM Modi.

Opposition leaders were quick to respond. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut pointed out Modi’s past enforcement of the 75-year retirement norm on senior BJP leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi called the apparent double standard “unprincipled.”

The BJP, however, dismissed the talk. Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier clarified there’s no retirement age in the party constitution, asserting Modi will continue to lead until 2029.

Interestingly, on the same day, Shah spoke of his own post-retirement plans—studying scriptures and organic farming—though he gave no timeline.

Observers note that while RSS chiefs have historically stepped down only due to ill health, Bhagwat remains active and fit. Analysts suggest the remark may reflect deeper strategic tussles between the RSS and BJP, particularly over succession and party leadership.

Whether it was a philosophical reflection or a pointed message, Bhagwat’s statement has reignited debates on leadership succession within the Sangh Parivar, just as both he and Modi near a symbolic milestone.
