PUNE: In a deeply disturbing incident, a 22-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in her apartment in Pune’s Kondhwa area by a man pretending to be a courier delivery agent.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM on Wednesday evening. According to police sources, the woman, who works with a private firm, was alone at the time as her brother was out of town.
The suspect reportedly gained entry to the flat by requesting a pen for a delivery signature. As the woman turned to retrieve it, he forcibly entered and locked the door behind him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Rajkumar Shinde stated that the woman does not recall the events following the man’s entry. She regained consciousness roughly an hour later and immediately informed her relatives, who contacted the police.
Investigators suspect the assailant may have used a sedative or chemical spray to incapacitate the victim. Forensic experts are examining the scene and collecting evidence to confirm the use of any substances.
The accused allegedly left a threatening message on the victim’s phone, warning her against reporting the crime. He is also believed to have taken a selfie using her phone and threatened to leak explicit images if she spoke out.
Police are analyzing CCTV footage from the area, which reportedly captured the suspect’s face. A manhunt is currently underway.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 64 (rape), Section 77 (voyeurism), and Section 351(2) (criminal intimidation).
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in residential areas. The investigation is ongoing.
