Seventeen Daughters, One Name: Kushinagar Welcomes Baby ‘Sindoor’

In a quiet corner of Uttar Pradesh, patriotism has found a new name. Yes! Seventeen newborn girls in Kushinagar have been named Sindoor, a heartfelt tribute to India’s triumph in Operation Sindhoor, the counterstrike launched after the Pahalgam terror attack.

Born on May 9th and 10th, just days after India responded to Pakistan-backed terror, these babies carry not mere names, they carry stories of courage, remembrance, and hope.

“My daughter was born just two days after our brave soldiers avenged the attack. I wept for the martyrs, and then I thought; what better way to honour them than to name her Sindoor?” said Neha Gupta, a mother from Kushinagar.

In many Hindu households in eastern UP, naming is traditionally done by the paternal aunt. But this time, families are rewriting customs with courage. “This name is not just mine, it belongs to every soldier who bled for us,” said Archana Shahi, holding her newborn in Bhedihari village. Her husband Ajit added, “We are safe here because of the soldiers. Naming her Sindoor is the least we could do to show our respect.”

‘Sindoor’ is the sacred vermilion worn by married women and has now taken a new meaning. Once a private symbol of love and marriage, today it shines on the public stage as a mark of sacrifice and solidarity.
Dr. R.K. Shahi of the Government Medical College confirmed that 17 girls born during the operation now carry the name. “It’s a wave of gratitude and silent nationalism. These families may be small, but their spirit is immense,” he said.

Social worker Rajesh Mani sees this as more than a gesture. “This is Kushinagar’s salute to the jawans. Perhaps one day, these girls will wear the uniform too.”
In a world of momentary headlines, these babies are a living memory. The name ‘Sindoor’ now echoes not just from temples and thresholds—but from hospital wards and family registers. Sindoor is not just a name, it’s a legacy.
And in doing so, India names her daughters with pride.
