Centre introduces ‘One Nation One Election Bill ‘ in Loksabha

NDC Desk

One Nation, One Election (ONOE) Bill, a visionary reform championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was introduced before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on December 17, 2024.

The 129th Constitutional Amendment marks a decisive step towards transforming India’s electoral process and seeks to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

India the world’s largest democracy is perpetually in election mode with more than a billion voters, 28 states, 8 union territories.

Supporters are of the opinion that ONOE will streamline governance, drastically cut campaign costs, and free administrative resources otherwise consumed by frequent elections.

The Opposition, led by the I.N.D.I.A, has vehemently opposed the Bill citing threat to the federal nature of the Indian constitution as it reduces autonomy of states and a blow to the regional parties.

The bill must be ratified by 2/3rd (307/ 461 Votes) majority. But the government secured only (269), while the opposition garnered 198. The BJP led Union Government is confident of pushing the bill for the benefit of the nation.

The debate has begun, and its outcome will reshape the way India votes—and governs.
