Omar Abdullah Faces Major NC Dissent: 19 MLAs Demand Cabinet Overhaul and Removal of Key Aides

By Political Bureau | New Delhi Chronicle

Trouble is brewing within Jammu and Kashmir’s ruling National Conference (NC) as internal friction spills into the open. Following Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent cabinet expansion, a collective of 19 disgruntled party legislators has intensified pressure on the leadership, demanding a comprehensive structural overhaul of the council of ministers.

Closed-Door Meeting Highlights Deepening Rifts

The brewing revolt came to light following a high-stakes, closed-door meeting held in Srinagar. Discontent has steadily grown among senior legislators who felt sidelined during the recent ministerial selection process.

According to sources close to the development, the dissenting bloc adopted a formal resolution targeting key areas of governance and party administration:

Cabinet Reshuffle: The legislators have strongly urged that ministers who have already completed two years in office should step down to accommodate fresh faces.

Merit and Regional Representation: Complaints have mounted that the selection process failed to accurately balance seniority, merit, and fair geographic representation across the Union Territory.

Targeting Aides: Beyond ministerial changes, the resolution explicitly demands the removal of two prominent political functionaries, accusing them of uncalled-for interference in internal party affairs and administrative decision-making.

Pressure Mounts on Party Leadership

The immediate political fallout has put Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the central party apparatus in a tight corner. The conspicuous absence of several key leaders from recent swearing-in ceremonies had already signaled simmering discontent, but the unified push by 19 MLAs transforms individual grievances into an organized political challenge.

While senior party figures have attempted to project a facade of unity, opposition parties—particularly the BJP—have been swift to capitalize on the developments, pointing to internal vulnerabilities within the ruling establishment.

What Lies Ahead

For Omar Abdullah, the immediate priority is quelling the storm while keeping the legislative majority intact. Whether the party leadership chooses dialogue and structural compromise or opts for disciplinary rigidity will dictate the future stability of the National Conference administration in the days to come.
