Why PM Modi Picked Pralhad Joshi as Education Minister to Replace Dharmendra Pradhan

NEW DELHI — In a major political and administrative realignment at the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assigned Union Cabinet Minister Pralhad Joshi additional charge of the Ministry of Education. The decision follows the sudden resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, who stepped down from his post amid mounting public outcry, protests, and intense scrutiny surrounding irregularities in the NEET-UG entrance examinations and management issues within the National Testing Agency (NTA).

President Droupadi Murmu accepted Pradhan’s resignation on the advice of PM Modi, immediately directing that Pralhad Joshi—who currently holds the portfolios of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and New & Renewable Energy—take over Shastri Bhawan’s education portfolio until a full-time successor is named.

The Crisis Manager: Why PM Modi Bet on Pralhad Joshi

The handover comes at a precarious juncture for the central government. With nationwide student agitation over exam security and the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament underway, Prime Minister Modi turned to a seasoned administrator and political troubleshooter known for handling tough legislative and administrative challenges.

1. Proven Parliamentary Strategy

Joshi previously served as the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs from 2019 to 2024. Having navigated contentious debates and legislative deadlocks in both Houses of Parliament, his deep procedural knowledge and calm demeanor under fire make him the ideal choice to deflect opposition attacks and present a unified, rule-backed government strategy during parliamentary proceedings.

2. Reputation for Strict Administrative Discipline

A five-time Member of Parliament representing Karnataka’s Dharwad constituency, Joshi has built a reputation within the ruling party as a focused, disciplined minister who prioritizes policy implementation over political grandstanding. His appointment signals the government’s intent to restore institutional integrity quickly.

Immediate Priorities at Shastri Bhawan

Taking charge of the Education Ministry puts Joshi directly at the helm of several pressing tasks that require swift intervention:

Overhauling the NTA & Examination Formats: Restructuring the operational apparatus of the National Testing Agency to eliminate vulnerabilities, while expediting transitions toward secure Computer-Based Test (CBT) systems.

Strict Enforcement of Anti-Paper Leak Laws: Implementing new, stringent legal frameworks aimed at penalizing exam malpractice and bringing offenders to justice.

Rebuilding Student & Parent Trust: Engaging in direct, transparent communication with candidates, parents, and academic institutions to alleviate anxiety and restore confidence in national entrance assessments.

Sustaining NEP 2020 Momentum: Ensuring that core educational milestones—including the rollout of the National Education Policy 2020, higher education assessments, and skill-development programs—continue without interruption.

A Masterstroke for Stability

Rather than opting for an immediate political compromise, PM Modi’s choice prioritizes administrative stability and crisis management experience. As Shastri Bhawan prepares for structural adjustments under Joshi’s stewardship, education stakeholders across the country will be closely monitoring how rapidly the veteran minister can streamline exam processes and restore public trust.
