EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Spain claimed their second FIFA World Cup title in dramatic fashion, defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a tense final at MetLife Stadium.

Substitute Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, turning home a decisive finish past Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to secure La Roja’s return to the pinnacle of global football 16 years after their first triumph in 2010.

Extra-Time Drama Seals Historical Double

The match featured a tactical masterclass between two reigning continental champions. Spain controlled 60% of possession and launched 20 shots, but were repeatedly thwarted by Martínez, who delivered a heroic 11-save performance to keep Argentina in the contest.

The defining moment arrived six minutes into extra time when Ferran Torres found space inside the box and slotted a low shot past Martínez to send the Spanish bench into raptures.

“We knew destiny was written for this group,” match-winner Ferran Torres stated post-match. “To score the winning goal in a World Cup final against Argentina is something you dream about as a child.”

Record-Breaking Unbeaten Run and Defensive Masterclass

With this victory, Luis de la Fuente’s side extended their unbeaten streak to 38 matches in all competitions, surpassing Italy’s previous world-record run of 37 games.

Furthermore, Spain produced one of the most dominant defensive campaigns in World Cup history:

1 Goal Conceded: Spain allowed just one goal across their entire eight-match tournament run.

7 Clean Sheets: Golden Glove winner Unai Simón shut out seven opponents, including Argentina in the final.

Simultaneous Crowns: Spain became the first nation in history to simultaneously hold both the men’s (2026) and women’s (2023) FIFA World Cup trophies.
