NEW DELHI: Former England spinner Graeme Swann believes the English bowling attack could face a daunting, unprecedented challenge if teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is handed his long-awaited international debut in the upcoming five-match T20I series. Swann described the 15-year-old prodigy as a batter who has looked “almost unplayable” in recent months.
The selection debate surrounding Sooryavanshi has intensified following India’s disappointing 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland. While the explosive left-hander was left out of the playing XI during that tour, calls for his inclusion have grown louder as India seeks to bounce back against England. Fans and experts alike are questioning how much longer the young prodigy can be kept away from a maiden international cap after his historic domestic exploits.
‘Hard to Prepare For Him’
Speaking on JioStar, Swann admitted that planning for a unique talent like the Rajasthan Royals opener is a nightmare for opposition analysts. Even though England’s bowlers have video footage from the Indian Premier League (IPL), finding a clear strategy to stop him remains a massive hurdle.
“It’s hard to prepare for a player like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi,” Swann observed. “He is still new to international cricket, but he has already played two IPL seasons. That means there is video footage available, and some of the England bowlers may have even bowled to him in the tournament. But the truth is, no one has really had much success against him so far. He has looked almost unplayable.”
Jofra Archer: England’s Only Secret Weapon?
While Swann anticipates a stern examination for England’s bowlers, he noted that one fast bowler in the squad might hold a slight tactical advantage. Express pacer Jofra Archer, who shared a dressing room with Sooryavanshi at the Rajasthan Royals, could possess the vital insider knowledge required to break through the teenager’s defenses.
“The one bowler who might have a slight advantage is Jofra Archer,” Swann pointed out. “He has seen Sooryavanshi from the dugout, bowled to him in the nets, and watched him closely. He has probably seen more of him than anyone else.”
Why the Hype Around Sooryavanshi is Real
Sooryavanshi earned his maiden national call-up after a breathtaking IPL 2026 season that took the cricket world by storm. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, the 15-year-old left-handed opener finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer, amassing a staggering 776 runs.
More terrifying for oppositions was his scoring rate—operating at a mind-boggling strike rate of 237.30. His historic campaign was studded with one century, five half-centuries, and a tournament-high 72 sixes.
As team management reassesses India’s batting blueprint following the setback in Ireland, all eyes will be on the team sheet when the England series kicks off. Cricket enthusiasts across the country are eagerly waiting to see if Team India will finally unleash their most explosive young weapon on the international stage.
